Finding A New Rhythm
Sophomore drummer improves cadence of band and life
February 25, 2019
Pounding on the drums, he lets go of everything, because now that he can hit something with a stick, he has fun with it and happily gets creative. His mood seems to brighten as he plays, and it’s easy for him to get into it. He’s been in band since 5th grade and in jazz band for two years.
“I like how simple it may seem but how complex it really is,” said Lucas Hitchcock, 16, fantasizing about how good it feels while drumming.
He loves how the drum keeps the band together as a background kind of noise, but it still is able to make its presence known. He made Jazz 3 for the second year in a row and now he is the only drummer in his group. There is a wide range of music and he really enjoys it.
Playing jazz really pushes him, and he has made a lot of progress. He works really hard for success in music. Jazz band practice is every Monday and Wednesday after school until 5 p.m, and alongside this commitment, Lucas also takes drumming lessons every Thursday to help him more. He is planning on being a part of his church band as well.
Lucas is into heavy metal music which helped him get into drumming and guitar. He plays guitar for fun and he teaches himself.
“He tends to drum on anything he touches when he is in a good mood,” his mother, Jessica Foasnaugh, said.
Being able to create your own rhythm is a feeling that he describes as amazing. His mother also said that when he joined the band, they had him try different instruments, but everyone could tell he really liked percussion.
Some of the artists he loves are drummers and he thought their style of drumming was neat, and they inspired him more. He also just loved their style in general. The drummers he likes have long hair and that is part of the reason he has been trying to grow his hair out long.
When a song is playing, he tends to drum on something along to the drums that are playing in the song. Once he starts to play, he loosens up and just lets go.
The band director, Mr. Hassell, says he does a very good job in class and does what he is supposed to do. He really enjoys band class and there are others in his class that are also in percussion.
The band has fun with it and they love to do what they do. Drums help with the rhythm and lets everyone in the band keep going. The music in the band can get complex, but that’s what pushes them to be better.
Lucas loves to play the heavy metal style music when he plays drums and guitar. He has more fun with it and he wants to continue with music. Him and everyone else in band don’t seem to get a lot of recognition like the sports do.
They work twice as hard and deserve some light. Seeing him and others play their instruments, it looks like a lot of work and they practice a lot to get it just right. Lucas has a drum set at home in the basement, in a little room, so he can practice whenever he wants to.
His grandparents got him the drum set because they know how much he loves playing.
He also has a guitar he likes to play, and he will watch videos on YouTube at home and try out new songs on his own, and keeps practicing until he gets it right. If he messes up, he just does it again. He pushes himself, so he can be better. He has made a lot of progress since he started and doesn’t plan on stopping.
