Netflix’s Roma Poised to Suprise at Oscars
February 24, 2019
Ever since the first camera shot film in New York city back in the 1880’s people have been amazed by motion picture. Ever since that day millions of stories have been told on both the big and small screens. With the uncountable number of movies and shows portrayed on the screen an award who was created nearly 100 years ago to honor all the hard work that gets put into the film process, so the first Academy Awards or Oscars were held in the Roosevelt Hotel in New York City back in 1929. Now over 90 years later the biggest night in Hollywood is just around the corner and its shaping out to be an interesting one.
The 91st annual Oscars is a week away and predictions on who is going home with the awards have been coming out for months now. Awards that will be up for grabs include the usual, best picture, best actor and actress, best animated movie, best visual effects, and many more. Starting with best picture, the most coveted award, the award given to what the academy thinks was the best film to come out this past year. The movies in this category include Bohemian Rhapsody, BlackkKlansman, A Star is Born, and the biggest surprise, for the first time a marvel superhero movie, last year’s Black Panther.
Bohemian Rhapsody the biopic about the legendary band Queen shockingly took home best drama at the golden globes last month. but the movie that will probably take-home best picture is Netflix’s Roma. Never heard of it? Don’t worry not many people have, but the academy did. Roma has the perfect combination to win an Oscar, a diverse cast of likeable actors, a beloved director, and a plot focused on real world issues.
Right next to best picture, animated films had a good year with Incredibles 2, Spider-man Into The Spider Verse and Isle of Dogs. Right now, it looks like the two superhero films the surprisingly spectacular Spider-man into the spider verse and the long-awaited return of the Incredibles are neck and neck. With spider verse upsetting and winning at the golden globes as well as having some of the best animation ever put on screen in recent years. It looks like Spiderman will swing by and take the Oscar this year
As far as actors and actress are concerned. This race is tight between actors Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, and Rami Malek. Though Bradley Cooper went the distance and learned how to sing along side Lady Gaga, and Rami Malek might have used the worst teeth ever put on screen to look like his character Freddie Mercury in the Queen movie. Christian Bale is looking like he will take the Oscar home for his portrayal of real-life politician Dick Chaney.
Actress up for best leading lady include, Glenn Close, Olivia Coleman, and Lady Gaga. Though it would be amazing and a big upset to see Lady Gaga win for A Star is Born. The most likely to be Glenn Close for The Wife.
The number one thing that never gets enough credit at the Oscars and film in general are the screen writers. Sure, the directors and actors are amazing, and the film couldn’t go without it. But the words the actors say in the film come from the writers in the writing room who are normally the first people to work on the film. The films up for best screenplay this year include, Roma, Green Book, Vice, and The Favorite. The film out of all these that has the best dialogue and heart in its writing and characters overall must be Green Book. The true story about the very unlikely friendship.
With the Oscars less then a few hours away and all of Hollywood on their feet waiting to see who will take home the awards, it looks to be an electric night with hopefully some upsets and a few explosive moments.
