Basketball Recap: Girls face Dekalb Friday

Boys and Girls Both Pick Up Wins

Girls

Friday: The girls finished up SAC play on Friday with a sectional preview matchup against Snider, resulting in a convincing 84-36 victory on Senior Night. After heading to the locker room with a 47-16 lead, the girls kept up the heat in the second half, allowing just 20 more points to hold the Panthers to a total of 36 points. Alyssa Kimes led the girls in scoring with 12 points  and Julia Miller was a close second with 11.

Tuesday: To open sectional play the girls defeated Snider 68-35 in what was a closer game than Friday, as indicated by the Chargers only leading by three at the end of the first frame. However the Chargers began to pull away in the second quarter, jumping out to a 40-19 halftime lead. The Chargers didn’t look back after that, scoring 14 more points in each of the remaining quarters en route to the win. Laney Steckler and Kelli Damman both reached double digits in scoring, with 21 and 14 points respectively.

The Girls continue sectional play this Friday against DeKalb with tip off set for 7:30 p.m.

Boys

Friday: In Friday nights SAC matchup against the Snider Panthers, the Chargers fell behind early before a 14-3 second quarter gave them a 22-13 halftime lead. However the Panthers wouldn’t go away, keeping the game interesting for much of the 4th quarter before the Chargers made the clutch free throws to seal a 55-46 record, improving to 12-2 (5-1 SAC) and maintaining their tie for third in the SAC standings. You can read more about the Chargers season and road to Sectionals here. The Chargers were led in scoring by Daniel McKeeman with 19 points who shot 73% from the field (8-11).

Wednesday: The boys finished off an undefeated month of January with a 56-43 victory over Huntington North on Wednesday night. Yet again the boys were behind after a quarter of play, and yet again an outburst of scoring in the second quarter gave them the lead. The 23-6 second quarter run was led by Dan McKeeman who finished the first half with 20 points. In the second half the teams were nearly even throughout, with the Chargers only coming out two points ahead in second half scoring. McKeeman finished with 21 points which included 6-of-8 from beyond the arch. David Ejah had the second most points on the team, adding nine for the Chargers and Arius Jones was a force on the offensive glass, leading all players with four offensive rebounds in total. The boys next matchup with come on Tuesday in conference play at North Side.

Also, in this weeks IBCA Coaches Poll, the Chargers moved up two places, going from 20th last week to number 18 this week.
