The girls basketball team is gearing up for an exciting season this year. They have returning talent and good energy. The coach Mark Redding is entering his 13th year of coaching the team with a record of 180-109 (As of November 18), he’s coached an overall of 30 years with a career record of 374-281.
According to Wane15.com, during his years of coaching he’s had his teams win 11 sectionals, three regionals, one semi state, and one state championship. He was chosen as one of the six girl’s basketball coaches in Fort Wayne to be honored as one of the “Bob King coaches of the year” by popular vote of his peers.
“Last year, we had a down year, but our expectation this year is a long run in the tournament,” Coach Redding said in an email.
He’s very confident in this year’s team, with the returning players Ava Myers scoring 7.5 points average per game, Jersey Paul who averaged 14.3 points a game, and Lily George topping the team with an average of 14.9 points per game.
There’s also key returners such as Lauren Kirkpatrick, Callie Mitchell, and Madi Gawthrop who will play key roles in this team’s season. Cala Haffner, Mackenzie Marsee, Megan Lanning, Kylie Gibbs, Lyla Frey, Stella Kruse, and Olivia Hoch, are all newcomers to the team who will be adding athleticism and versatility to the team.
“This team will be more athletic, quicker, and deeper, which allows us to play several players,” said Redding.
This season the team plans to focus on their offense and defense more to be able to pressure the other teams full court. The team will work harder and stronger than ever this year to make up for last year’s disappointing season.
Carroll is 1-0 to open the season after defeating #12 Fishers on the road last Saturday, 63-59, the team shot 51% from the field with Jersey Paul dropping 27 and Cala Haffner getting 19 points.
