Movie theaters are expected to fill up this November given the notoriety of three of the new titles hitting the big screens in the coming weeks.
Breaking the ice are Gladiator II and Wicked on Nov. 22, opposites attracting in what seems like a reality already experienced in July 2024 during the Barbenheimer era. To follow will be the release of Moana II on Nov. 27, eagerly awaited by young and old audiences alike.
Gladiator II had its world premiere in Sydney, Australia on October 30, 2024, followed up, on 13th of Nov. 2024, by a great Royal global premiere in London, which saw the presence of King Charles of England. Directed by Ridley Scott, this sequel features a new and fresh cast, starring Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Denzel Washington, Joseph Quinn, and Connie Nielsen.
The story of this Paramount Pictures movie, which set a budget of $250–310 million, takes place decades after the first film ended and presents Lucius, nephew of Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), who in the last movie got the better of his father to conquer the throne. Lucius will find himself in a situation similar to that of Maximus, whose figure will be a great inspiration for him, who will thus decide to follow in his footsteps.
Wicked, the film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical directed by Jon M. Chu and distributed by Universal Picture, premiered on November 9th, 2024 at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles. The cast hosts an exceptional selection of actors, starting with the Grammy-awarded singer and actress Ariana Grande, who returns to the big screens using her full name, as shown by the Wicked Credits, with the role of Glinda. Joining Grande as co-star, Cynthia Erivo in the role of Elphaba. As supporting roles, other big names take part in this picture: Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Bowen Yang, Marissa Bode, Peter Dinklage, Michelle Yeoh, and Jeff Goldblum.
The first official teaser, dropped with a commercial spot during Super Bowl LVIII, and the official trailer, released this May 15, 2024, begins with the question: “Are people born wicked?”, capturing the full message of this highly anticipated movie in just one sentence. Critics were positively impressed, declaring the movie musical a “masterpiece” and a must-see following early screenings.
Moana II, reunites Moana and Maui three years later for an expansive new voyage alongside a crew of unlikely seafarers to the far seas of Oceania, after receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors. The cast remains the same as the first, featuring, Auli’i Cravalho (Moana), Dwayne Johnson (Maui), and Nicole Scherzinger (Sina). Directed by Dana Ledoux Miller, Jason Hand and David Derrick Jr., this Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures new cartoon movie features a soundtrack track list of sixteen new songs, including a new theme song titled “Beyond” by Auli’i Cravalho ft. Te Vaka. All the music for the realization of this project was curated by Mark Mancina, Opetaia Foaʻi, Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear.
