When teachers say, “I don’t get paid enough for this,” they’re telling the truth. The salary of a first-year teacher goes at least up to $40,000, which is the minimum in Indiana.
Even with increased payment over the years, individuals still assert our educators should be paid more. This is because of the amount of work, concerns of living expenses, and being licensed professionals.
Teachers put in a substantial amount of work compared to most professions.
“Most teachers, it is an 8-5 job. Then I go home and I still do some grading at night, and check emails,” said Helen Brubaker, a freshmen English teacher. “I feel like we deserve more because we are not just here in person, but also digital as well.”
It is important to note unlike most professions, teachers often do most of their work at home. With constant emails and many assignments to grade, there’s barely a time when a teacher isn’t busy.
Despite the cost of living increasing, the minimum wage has stayed the same.
“I think living in Indiana teachers might be at a little bit of an advantage compared to places where it is a lot more expensive to live,” said Kelly Heidenreich, a 9th-grade Biology teacher.
Despite Indiana having an average sum of $1,949 per person, lots of the teachers live with multiple people. This adds up quickly, and often the average salary is not enough by itself.
Like many other well-paid professions, a teacher is a licensed professional
“We are required to take a test to earn our license after graduating with a bachelor’s degree. We then complete 90 hours of professional development to renew that license every five years.” said Jamie Bauer, Digital Design teacher. “If you compare teacher salaries to other licensed professionals with similar education, professional development, and licensing requirements, we have one of the lowest average salaries in the state.”
