The release of Silent Hill 2 Remake late last year gives a rebirth to one of the greatest horror survival games ever made.
Silent Hill is a survival horror game released on October 7, 2024 for PlayStation 5 and PC where you follow the story of a man named James Sunderland as he returns to the town of silent hill to look for his wife. When he arrives he finds an empty town shrouded in a dense fog. As you travel farther into the town, you find out you’re not the only thing lurking in the town. As you play through the game you must complete puzzles, find keys, and fight your way through the town to get to the place your wife told you she would be waiting at. The farther you walk into the darkness that consumes the silent hill, the more distorted and disfigured the monsters become.
The gameplay mechanics are good but hard to get used to, for the first portion it is important to learn how to use the melee due to the fact that you will eventually want to save your ammo for the bosses since using melee will be difficult against bosses making conserving ammo critical. Along with these features they allow great setting customization allowing anyone to get their perfect settings for anyone.
The game’s graphics are some of the best even with small details making the game look absolutely amazing and truly fitting its $20 million budget. Though one down side to these amazing graphics is that most of the game takes place wandering through the darkness so you don’t get to enjoy the game’s look.
Along with the graphics the sound quality is also really good and early from the creaking in the apartments to the radio going off when a monster is nearby. Another thing this game did better was the voice acting. Silent Hill has been known for its hilariously bad voice acting due to it needing to be dubbed and always being dubbed badly but they fixed that.
One Amazing feature with this game is that it holds seven different endings allowing playthroughs to feel new and giving players a new challenge to get each ending to unlock the secret seventh ending.
Compared to other survival horror games this one stands alone due to its good mechanics and and actually maintaining the horror element all the way to the end and not beginning to feel like a run and gun game with horror elements such as resident evil.
Silent hill 2 is definitely a great game but it is super difficult. The original was a challenge but the remake takes that and makes it harder. With the low amount of health and heals being extremely hard to find it makes death common. Items like ammo are considerably easier to find but still hard to hold on to with the amount of monsters. All this aside it’s a great game and worth the play.
