Brandy Melville sticks with a questionable background and current history affiliating with the body images commonly in adolescent girls due to their one size clothing.
“I know how they only limit their sizing to a specific body type but also just the sexism that goes into the hiring of the workers,” said fashion teacher Meaghan Sholl.
Brandy has created a standard for some girls as long as the early 2000s, when Tumblr was popular.
“I appreciate them acknowledging that there’s other sizes of people, but I’m not sure why they’re not going out and putting sizes into a variety,” Sholl said.
Brandy’s clothes usually range towards girls in the XS-S sizing, who tend to be more petite, lately they’ve made their clothing bigger into more of a M-L sizing.
“You’re still only targeting one body size regardless,” Kylie DeRose said.
A lot of their original shoppers were specified for petite girls, but changing it has made these original shoppers upset.
Some people don’t support companies that do fast fashion trends like Brandy. Brandy claims that their clothing is made in Italy, yet not manufactured in Italy but shipped from there.
“They say their clothes are made in Italy, but it’s just an Italian based company but all their manufacturing is still done in third world countries that just get shipped back to Italy so they can put that label on claiming that it’s made there,” said Sholl
Brandy Mellville was a released documentary on HBO Max exposing some insights about this company.
“I watched a little bit of it and I was shocked, because I didn’t expect this from such a popular brand,” said Stella Wingard.
The documentary goes on explaining about their racism and sexism, along with body checks upon their employees.
“They really only go towards skinny girls, and I heard in the documentary how they strictly try to only hire white women too,” said Wingard.
Selling one sized clothing has always been something Brandy has been well known for and what mainly raised their controversies.
“I feel like they want to apply to more people, since there are already more plus size stores around such as Lane Bryant, and doing the opposite might make petite girls more included as well when they aren’t able to have clothing fit them” said DeRose.
There has been no further implication that Brandy is in an attempt to try to get their old shoppers back, but as of now they are still a one size clothing store targeting the latest fashion trends.
