Nearly double the work, nearly double the amount of time spent outside of class, yet still no GPA boost for honors classes for freshmen this year.
The class of 2028 is not able to receive the GPA boost for honors classes like there have been in the past. This NEEDS to be reevaluated.
I put so much more effort and time outside of school than my friends not in honors classes, that it is only fair to receive the GPA boost associated with the honors classes I am taking. Last year while picking my honors courses, I chose both World History and Civilization Honors, and English 9 Honors.
I was under the impression that this would mean that along with an advanced level course, I would get a GPA boost as well. However, this policy was changed for the class of 2028. Now, I am stuck doing homework every night outside of school, and lack the grades that show that.
I understand the thought process behind wanting students to take the challenging courses, I really do. However, looking at the classwork load and the depth of learning required in this class, it’s not as easy to get a good grade in those classes as it is in a normal level course.
Don’t get me wrong, I love history and am happily in an honors class because I am good at the subject. I just think that my passion for history would be stronger if I got a bit of compensation for all the extra work I’m putting in. I feel annoyed when I have to spend upwards of an hour reading my English book that is over 500 pages knowing academic students were able to choose their book and have a much less rigid schedule.
If we are no longer given a GPA boost for honors level courses, what’s the point? I can read books in my free time and learn about history through textbooks and articles, not having to worry about assignments or being graded on a much more advanced scale.
At heart though, I secretly like saying I’m maintaining grades in advanced level courses at family gatherings. I enjoy being perceived as smart.
And yeah, that may be egotistical of me, but think about it. Is it more comforting knowing you have an A in English or an A in Honors English? For me personally, it’s the latter.
