Carroll High School announced a new addition to its campus, which has caused the school to undergo extensive construction. The walls of the existing building have been removed and the ground has been dug up to make way for the new structure.
As a result, teachers and students have been impacted by the construction.
“Students are affected by the construction more so than I am. Both in class and outside of class. From the adjusted parking to the changed cafeteria seating, it is just another stressor added to their daily school life,” said math teacher Olivia Knight.
Due to the ongoing construction work, some students are also concerned about finding a parking spot in time. Those who arrive late have to park at the back of the lot and walk to Door 19, which can be long, especially if they are running late.
The ongoing construction work also impacts teachers, who are responding to it positively.
“It may not be comfortable right now, and I have felt ‘earthquakes’ in my room plenty of times that I can leave with. In life sometimes we will be uncomfortable, but think positive and everything will be okay,” said geometry and Algebra 2 teacher Beldina Colbert.
Despite the temporary inconvenience caused by the construction work, they seem to be optimistic about the outcome and look forward to the improvements that the project will bring to the school’s facilities.
“I do believe we need to increase the size of our school, or at the very least, increase the number of classrooms and staff here at Carroll. With the increasing number of students, the number of students per class will increase, as well as the availability of said classes,’’ said Knight.
It is evident that teachers are not just focusing on the present situation, but they are also thinking ahead and taking into account the potential challenges that may arise in the future due to the city’s increasing population
“I will think it’s a concern when the classes are too large that the teachers are having difficulty with classroom management and learning. When our class sizes get above a certain number depending on the subject and group of students, then I’ll be concerned,” said Colbert.
The ongoing construction work on the school premises has been a source of frustration for many students and teachers, but once finished, it is expected to provide a better learning and working environment for everyone in the school community.
