In the second official match of the season, the varsity boys got their revenge from last year’s sectionals defeat, winning 5-0 against the Leo Lions.
The Chargers came in strong, reminiscing on Leo’s shocking upset in Sectionals 3-2 after losing in the regular season 2-3. The JV also had a successful night, winning 11-2. Although both the 2023 regular season and post-season matches were very close, the team made sure there was no question in their match last night, the scores being:
One singles Andrew Jamison 6-3, 4-6, 6-3
Two singles Tim Croft 6-3, 6-2
Three singles Alex Sznaza 6-2, 6-1
One Doubles Sam Nietert and Sam Mettler 6-3, 6-2
Two Doubles Alex Holley and Jack Jones 7-5, 6-1
In high school tennis, a match is played best of three sets, with a set being the first person to win six games. A game consists of the scoring terms “15” “30” “40” and “Game”, each one representing one point, whoever reaches “game” first wins that game.
“They sent us home early last year so we were all pleased to get our revenge”, Junior Andrew Jamison quipped.
With this being only the second match of the season, the Chargers have a long way to go before sectionals, but they are very hopeful for their regular season and postseason performance.
“I think our team this year has an extremely strong chance at making semi-state, and based on the draw we could maybe even go further.” Said Sophomore Samuel Mettler.
The Girl’s team fought to state last year, inspiring the boys to do the same. The last time the boys went to semi-state was in 2021, but with the momentum the season has started with, their confidence levels are high.
The underclassman Chargers are also thinking of the future after this season.
“My personal goals for this season are to help the team get as prepared as possible not only for this season but for the upcoming years by becoming the highest level player I can be”. Said Sophomore Tim Croft as he reflected on the improvements that he had made from last season to this season, moving from 6 JV to 2 Singles, Croft is hopeful his rapid improvement will continue.
The tennis team hopes for a bright season ahead of them.
If you are interested in supporting them this year their schedule can be found on the High School’s website in the athletics section.
