A new teacher took over the Principles of Computing class on August 19 after substitute teachers had taught the class since the beginning of the year.
The old Principles of Computing teacher left to work at Google this summer, the position was left empty until Matthew Arnold arrived and started teaching.
“We thought we had someone to fill the spot after Mr. Campbell left,” Assistant Principal Jeremy Yates said. “But they couldn’t find them. They also stated that due to this they had to do something called a media blast.”
The school had a Principles of Computing teacher lined up to start the semester, but they were unable to begin teaching the class when class started up.
The school then sent a “media blast” to locate a computing teacher, which led Arnold to the high school from CodeHS, a Chicago-based educational technology company.
“My primary role was designing and building the company’s high school Unity game development courses. Some other course curricula I worked on included Principles of Computing, Web Design and Development, and mobile apps,” Arnold said.
Along with his computing expertise, Mr. Arnold brings his desire to again work with students. He had previously worked in special education and STEM.
“We were looking for people who could just click with kids and make learning computer stuff sound fun,” Yates said.
Mr. Arnold was also in demand in the computer world.
“I’m so excited to return to the classroom as I have a strong passion for learning and teaching all things tech,” Mr. Arnold said. “I had other options but felt that Carroll High School was the best fit for me.”
