While most seniors are worried about graduating, some seniors have already started their after-graduation journey. Seniors Sariah Borjas and Gabriella Frick both share their experiences with the internship program so far and whether or not they believe the program is worth it.
Sariah Borjas is completing her internship this semester at Byron Health Center, a nursing home specializing in treating mental health disorders.
“Personally, when I think of older folk, I view them as more sound[of mind], more wise, so it’s really hard to think about them with mental disorders like depression or schizophrenia,” Borjas said.
Borjas interns every Monday through Friday for about 90 minutes before going to school.
Borjas says one of her favorite parts of her internship is having “tons of freedom” in her schedule.
Borjas believes she learns a lot at her internship. So far, she’s learned about patient care, basic medical life, and how to wash her hands properly
Borjas recommends the internship program because it has helped her toward CNA certification through credit hours and because it “gives you a taste of what you’re looking for when you step outside of Carroll.”
Gabriella Frick is completing her internship at a doctor’s office by Parkview in the afternoon.
At her internships, Frick usually observes doctors and what their work day entails.
Similar to Borjas, Frick feels like she learns a lot daily. She’s learned a lot of patients don’t listen to their doctors and that not everyone knows how to take care of themselves.
Being away from school recharges Frick and gives her the head space to deal with high school.
“Being at school all day can be very stressful for me,” Frick said.
Frick enjoys meeting folks from different backgrounds and worlds.
“You meet all sorts of people,” she said.
