Mask mandate leads to protest on school grounds
Approximately 200 members made up of the NACS community protested the district’s mask mandate on the corner of Carroll and Bethel and at Carroll High School’s Door 13 in the morning of September 1.
The protestors objected to the mask mandate passed by a 3-2 vote at the NACS school board meeting on August 30.
According to an email sent to parents from Superintendent Dr. Himsel, the mandate was passed to prevent another temporary shutdown of the school.
“We are on a trajectory that would soon require us to temporarily shift to full-time remote learning which we would prefer avoiding,” said Dr. Himsel.
In one week of this month, the number of confirmed student-COVID cases has been greater than any one month during the 2020-21 school year, according to Dr. Himsel’s email.
Last November, NACS reported 91 student cases which was the most of any month that year. From this August 23 to 29, NACS confirmed 105 student cases.
